The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines recently released the IP Statistics for 2016. This annual release covers relevant data on trademarks, patent, utility model, industrial design and copyright filings handled by the Intellectual Property Office for the year, offering stakeholders a glimpse at the yearly trend and movement in the volume and types of applications filed.
Trademarks
Based on the recent IP Statistics, the applications for trademark registration filed in 2016 totaled 27,120, almost the same number as those filed in 2015. Out of the trademark applications filed in 2016, 25,934 were registered.
Out of the 27,120 trademark applications, 15,327 were filed by Philippine resident applicants while the rest were filed by non-resident applicants. Among the trademark applications filed by non-resident applicants, 7,108 trademark applications were filed directly with the IPO and 4,685 trademark applications were filed through the Madrid system.
The top three foreign countries of origin for trademark filings are United States of America, Peoples Republic of China and Japan. Most of the trademark applications filed in the year 2016 were related to the agriculture, services, management communications, real estate, financial services and chemical industries.

Patents
For the year 2016, patent applications totaled 3,098. Out of the total 3, 098 patent applications, 2,844 patent applications were filed by non-resident applicants while only 254 patent application were filed by applicants from the Philippines. Non-resident patent applications filed through the PCT Route totaled 2,601 while only 243 were filed directly by non-resident applicants. Similar to filings for trademarks, the top 3 foreign countries of origin for patent filings with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines are the United States of America, Peoples Republic of China and Japan. The top fields of technology covered by patent application for 2016 are pharmaceuticals, organic fine chemistry and basic materials chemistry. The total number of patent applications granted and registered in 2016 is 1,998.

Utility Model
Based on the data provided by the Intellectual Property Office in the IP Statistics, Utility Model applications totaled 1,127 for the year 2016. Out of this total, 1,083 were filed by Philippine resident applicants while 45 utility model applications were filed by non-resident applicants. On the other hand, a total of 590 utility model applications were registered in 2016, 555 of which are owned by Philippine residents and only 35 utility model registrations are owned by non-Philippine residents. The top 3 foreign countries of origin for utility model filings are Taiwan, China and Thailand.

Industrial Design
Industrial Design applications totaled 1,488 for the year 2016. Out of this, 519 were filed by applicants from the Philippines while 969 industrial design applications were filed by non-resident applicants. On the other hand, a total of 884 industrial design applications were registered in 2016, 457 of which are registered under the name of Philippine residents and 427 industrial design registrations are under the name of foreign individuals or corporations. The top 3 foreign countries of origin for utility model filings are Japan, United States of America and South Korea.

Copyright
The number of copyright filings and registrations has been relatively constant throughout the years. For 2016, a total of 919 copyright filings have been filed and a total of 701 copyright registrations were issued.
